Urban Tree Project
We are currently growing and maintaining hundreds of trees which will be planted in various
neighborhoods within the city to restore the green tree canopy that has been damaged or lost to blight,
urban development and most recently by the effects of Hurricane Katrina.  With an estimated 50,000
trees on public space lost to the hurricane the project is designed to meet the needs of the increasing
demand for both trees and community involvement.

In addition to growing trees, there is an educational component of the project with youth groups and
adults to teach the benefits of trees, such as reduction of heating and cooling costs, provision of
habitats for area wildlife and filtration of air from pollutants.

  •     Citizens must be willing to commit at least one year to maintain the tree.
  •     Participants must first sign a letter of agreement prior to planting
  •     Trees are to be planted in an approved street-to-sidewalk or public space location.
  •     Project approval is based on tree selection and safety issues related to the location
               request, and most importantly,
  •     Approval will support the integrity of the project by meeting the needs of the priority
               neighborhoods.

Since Hurricane Katrina Parkway Partners has planted almost 100 trees.  We still have many Louisiana
native trees in our lot, ready to be planted and maintained by citizens of New Orleans, including live
oaks, crepe myrtles, hollies, magnolias and red buds.  The goal is to have 300 trees planted in the city
by the summer of 2006.

The project is partially funded by Home Depot and by the Urban and Community Forestry Grant in
cooperation with the LA Department of Agriculture and Forestry.  Since Parkway Partners is a non-profit
organization, grants like these help us achieve our efforts even more.

Through The Urban Tree Project, young and old alike are learning the benefits and values of street
trees in New Orleans. We are proud to help explain why trees are so important to us all, as well as to
help get more trees in the ground.
